Saint-Emilion is a right back appellation of Bordeaux. There is a varietly of soils, including clay-limestone and sandy gravel over iron pan, limestone and sand. Many of the chateaux have vines planted on more than one type of soil. Wines from this region are composed primarily of Merlot, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec completing the blends. Wines from this region are much softer than those from the left bank Médoc, and will therefore mature sooner.
